Someone is Aiming for the Byrnies…

Aaron Duran

Yes friends, your friendly neighborhood Geek is officially creating a Geek in the City award... Is it for best comic? No. Best RPG of the year? No, not really... Best use of a cute CGI animal in a non-Pixar film? Nah, but that isn't a bad idea... No friends, I am speaking of The Byrnies, the only award specifically designed for the writer or artist who can't keep their heads out of their ass... As always, The Byrnies are based solely on my own opinion and really shouldn't carry any weight… Even if they are true...

So who is in the 2007 running?

Well, good ‘ol John Byrne, the awards namesake, long ago entered the Hall of Fame and is no longer eligible… The same goes for Orson Scott Card, everyone’s favorite “Star Trek fans are idiots” guy and author who keeps writing the same damn Ender story time after time… So who is the newest nominee?

Marvel’s newest golden boy (who isn’t Brian Michael Bendis)… Mark Millar!

I know what you are thinking, “dude, Aaron, just because Civil War was ass and won’t have any real long term effects on the Marvel Universe doesn’t mean the guy deserves a Byrnie… You forgave DC for Our Worlds at War”. True, true… and penning a terrible story will never earn you a Byrnie nomination… However, stating the following will:

Like all my pals, the TV and movie people have come calling and even the computer game people (which is weird because games are for pedos and I have no interest).

The above being a response he gave when asked if Millar has been tempted to move onto TV, film, or game projects.

Having read the entire article, which can be found at Newsarama, I’m not quite sure how to take the above quote. Mark Millar is known for his off the cuff remakes and a sense of humor that many people take the wrong way. As one who has made many a comment that people didn’t find humor within (but sure find the insult), I willing to give Millar a pass… For now…

The fact is games are under a silent attack in the media and Congress. However, this isn’t really a new trend. Games have been blamed for the degeneration of youth ever since Tipper Gore lost her fight against Prince and Dee Snyder. I doubt the fight will ever go away as long as parents wish to blame their kid’s entertainment instead of looking within… Claiming that games are only enjoyed by pedophiles is a tad extreme. Actually, comparing my joy in the fragging of zombies to touching little kids is flat out offensive.

Come on Mark Millar, I know you are a smart guy and a talented writer… You don’t have to be a tool to get people’s attention… No matter what ‘ol Joe tells you…
