The Geeks Will Walk the Earth...

Aaron Duran

2000 Hours - We are slowly making our way to Backspace, I hope a few more people arrive because we're going to need help if this is going to work. We arrive a few minutes after 2000, the place is pretty packed and it’s hard to see. Thankfully, members of our group have already arrived and secured a location. More are supposed to arrive; we'll wait, but not too long. We can't wait too long.

Time is growing short.

2030 Hours - We can't wait any longer. It is time to start. There are six of us including me, more then last time, should be enough. I hope it is enough. We all look around and familiarize ourselves with the rules. Things start slowly. There aren't too many problems. We know the dead are out there, somewhere. It doesn't take long for us to realize there are no rules. We simply have to get out alive. I see my opening and make my move. Zombie3.jpg

2050 Hours - I know she didn't plan for it, but Red made a huge opening for me, all her shots aim true and the dead are dropping like flies around her.. I try not to gloat, I don't want her thinking I'm using her. Her shots blazed a clear path for me to the Army Surplus store. I see a few of them damn zombies milling about, but nothing I can't take care of. Just a few minutes and I can make a run for it.

2120 Hours - Friggen Blue! I never saw him coming. He took everything from me and left me for dead in the damn store. I got so used to listening for the dead, I never heard him coming. I heard his laugh though, his dirty stinking laugh as he robbed me of all that I worked for. Damn you Blue, least you could have done was take out a few of them shambling buggers as you ran away. Crap. Alone. Unarmed. Surrounded. Gonna’ be a long night.Zombie5.jpg

2130 Hours - I'm searching in the dark here. No way I can get out the front door, no more bullets and I don't feel that hot. This salvation of a store is going to become a tomb if I don't find a way out. I hear more shots in the distance, must be Black and Green, I saw both of them head north when I made a run for the Army Surplus store. The Sporting Goods store is up there. Wish I had thought of that. More gunshots, whatever they are after I hope its worth it. There, in the dark I see it, a tiny crack in the wall. Maybe if I ram it, hard, I can bust through. Escape down the alley or something. I hear the zombies getting closer. No choice.

2135 Hours - No good. Walls too thick. Dead getting closer now. So tired. Here they come. I see Orange outside. He walks away. Thanks. Dead closer now. Gonna’ get you Blue. Cold. Tired.

2150 Hours - How the hell did I get back where I started? It doesn't matter. I'm alive and someone dropped some bullets in the Town Square. Gonna’ need them; a few dead are right next to me. Different this time. Making my shots count. Drop them shamblers. I see Red making her way to the Fire Department, women moves fast. Wonder what she has planned. don't care, I see Blue down the street. Looks kinda’ surrounded, sucks for him. Be a shame if I left some fresh meat to attract more of the dead to him. I make a run for it. I see Black say something about stronger zombies. Not sure what he is talking about. Orange is behind me, not gonna’ help him either; he left me to die in that store. Orange pumps an undead full of lead, it keeps coming. Takes three shots before he drops the sucker. I hear Blue scream. You got what you deserved.

2200 Hours - Black sees a helicopter in the skies, its heading near me. The landing pad must be nearby, time to make a run for it. Orange must have gotten his second wind, he sure is moving fast, but not fast enough. Green trips him up, he falls hard. The zombies move in fast. I see my chance and go for it. Wonder what happened to Red? Hope whatever was in the Fire Station was worth it. All I care about is that helicopter. Damn, the dead are everywhere. Never seen them this thick. I keep shooting. Green pulls something out that makes the dead get back up. Thanks, I know we ain’ friends here, but you could at least not make it harder. They kill me they're gonna’ come after you. Keep shooting. Don't look back. Keep shooting.Zombie4.jpg

2230 Hours - Red is lost somewhere in the city. I hear Blue yell out in the distance, good. Green is keeping up with me; she seems content with letting me do the fighting. I don't care; if I'm the first one to drop a zombie then it means I'm the first to get to that helicopter. Orange pulls out a big ‘ol hand cannon. I hit the deck; my body is covered in undead gore. Who cares, clean up later. I can see the helicopter now. Only looks like room for one. Gonna’ be me. I can't believe it, I'm gonna’ survive this hellish nightmare!

2240 Hours - The helicopter is gone. I'm still in the city. The dead are moving in closer and closer now. I still don't know what happened. Black flew right past me, never would have thought a person could run that fast. Blue is dead, Red is lost, Green and Orange are standing next to me. They all look scared. The dead are getting closer. I can't even hear the helicopter anymore. Dead are getting closer. One bullet left. Getting closer. One bullet left. Crap.

Well, just because I got hosed at every turn by my so-called "friends" I enjoyed the hell out of the second official Gathering of Geeks at Backspace. As if the above wasn't a huge hint, us Geeks took a turn at playing the ever changing (and wholly enjoyable) game Zombies!!! by Twilight Games. With variable tiles, event cards, and 3.5 expansions packs Zombies!!! is never the same game twice. Simple but elegant (and highly customizable) rules allow for even novice gamers to set-up and start having zombie fun within a few minutes. If you are looking for a fun party game in between Romero film screenings at your next Geek fest, give Zombies!!! a try. Although the GoG tries to have a different game played at every meeting you can bet Zombies!!! will make it back into rotation very soon...Cause I still owe Blue big time!
