Hancock - Spoiler Free Review Mailman Chris
Superhero Movie of the Summer???
Not quite yet. We all know that The Dark Knight doesn't come out until July 18th.
But Hancock is out now and while we can't call it the event movie of the year, it
definitely is in the medal round. Will Smith, the King of July 4th, has done it again. I had a chance to take in the new movie Hancock last night and it is a great superhero movie. The brief spoiler-free synopsis of the movie is that Hancock (Smith) is a much-reviled being with superpowers living in L.A. He is reckless, drunk and mean. He does stop crime but does so at great cost to the the community and the taxpayers. The Angelenos cry out for his incarceration or even expulsion from the city. He saves the life of , a failed PR man, (played sheepishly by Jason Bateman) who then makes it his life's purpose to reinvent the image of Hancock.

The bulk of the movie is the interplay between Hancock and his impact on the
people around him and his efforts to improve his usual "don't give a shit" attitude. He is a hero that you want to see succeed. This movie succeeds in humanizing a superhero in a way that Brian Singer failed with Superman Returns. It also accomplished something else that Superman Returns failed at but to give that away would spoil too much. You'll see once you watch though.
I must caution this is a strong PG-13 movie that earns it's rating with lots of language (which is a surprise for fans of Smith's rap career). It has great action
sequences and a terrific plot line. The actors play well together and Charlize Theron is, as always, hot as balls. It's no Dark Knight, but it will hold you over for a few weeks.
If you only see one movie this weekend, go see Wall*E. If you've already watched Wall*E, or you're gonna see two, I would highly recommend seeing Hancock. If there were a Summer Olympics medal awarded for Superhero movie, The Dark Knight (unseen) would earn the Gold. Iron Man would eke out the Silver and Hancock would walk all over Ed Norton's Hulk to go home with the Bronze. Not too shabby for the Fresh Prince.
