The Greatest Viral Marketing Ploy EVER!

Illusionaire

My phone rings, and caller id states that it is Aaron Duran. But once I pick up, it is the commanding voice of Samuel L. Jackson that I hear instead.

JENNIFER! This is Samuel L. Jackson. Now you may know me from my roles in movies like Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, and The Incredibles. But I'm here today to make sure you go see a movie that holds a special place in my heart. I'm talkin' about SNAKES on a PLANE. I know that sounds crazy but I don't give a damn because SNAKES on a PLANE just might be the BEST motion picture ever made. It's that good. So listen up. Forget about your regular job messing with those crazy computers, and stop wasting all your free time messing around in those crazy chat rooms. And for gawd's sake, quit bragging about your wannabe prison tattoos. Get on that big noisy bus, go get your homeboy Aaron, and go see SNAKES on a PLANE. The one summer blockbuster that will take a big nasty bite. Now listen. You don't want to mess with me on this one because I WILL come after you, ya hear me?

Want to get Samuel L. Jackson to call YOUR friends? It's simple. And genius! Go to snakesonaplane.varitalk.com. Fill out a bit of information about the person who will be getting the message, such as the industry they work in, favorite hobbies, and so on, and it will be customized for them. I spent a good portion of last night having Sam call my friends and family, even my mother who is terrified of snakes, which resulted in this text message from my brother: "JENN!!!! I need your help... I think that Samuel L. Jackson is gonna kick my ass."

Yeah, it is a bit creepy that all you have to do to spoof caller id is fill out some fields in a Flash application, and the privacy policies state that they may keep the phone numbers to call you to buy the DVD later on down the line.

But not nearly as creepy as the chorus from Cobra Starship's soundtrack song Snakes on a Plane (Bring It). "I can see the venom in your eyes"? Ugh. It's awful yet campy enough to be compelling.

Late night showings of Snakes on a Plane begin August 17th, and I can't wait.
