GET OUT OF THE BASEMENT
Another Week of Events Aaron Duran
Sorry for the slow posting rate lately, your friendly neighborhood Geek has been freakishly busy. New homes, new businesses, new shows, a new everything. With all the events kicking into high gear as the holidays approach, it is sometimes nice to stop, sit down, and catching some good flicks in a good movie house. That is exactly when I intend to do this week at the Clinton Street Theater. First, some serious holiday gore from the father of "Grindhouse Cinema" – Blood Feast!
I could explain, but nothing I say would hold a candle to the exuberance exhumed from Dan Halstead, Portland Grindhouse Film Festival founder... This is the first gore exploitation film. Do you like movies with any type of disturbing violence whatsoever? Horror movies? John Waters’ movies? Peckinpah? Scorsese? Tarantino? Anything made in the last 40 years that didn't put you to sleep? Then you owe it to yourself to watch this movie. This movie set the precedent. Yeah, it's shot on noooooo budget and the actors suck (those smoking hot actresses weren’t hired for their method acting), but this movie is one of a kind, and completely changed movie history. Here's a beautiful 35mm print of a movie you will never get a chance to see in a theater again, that broke every rule in the book. Don’t miss this opportunity. Hershall Gordon Lewis is an unsung hero of cinema. He’s called the Godfather of Gore for a reason. Pay your respects! (Plays every night at 9pm till December 6, tickets are $6.00).
Whew, after that gore-fest, you're gonna' need some genuine Christmas nostalgia. Again, the Clinton Street Theater provides the entertainment. (Special thanks to Greg Hamilton for providing the information and hard work in securing these old prints)
A Very Animated Christmas - December 9 (Sunday) - 10th (Monday): 7pm and 9pm
Admission: $6 – 16mm prints – 54 minutes total running time.
The Snowman
United Kingdom, 1982 - Dianne Jackson - 26 minutes
Oscar-nominated animated adventure about a young English boy who makes a snowman one Christmas Eve, only for it to come to life that night and take him on a magical adventure to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus.
A Cosmic Christmas
Canada, 1977 - Clive Smith - 28 minutes
Three visiting aliens from an unknown planet come to Earth to learn the true meaning of Christmas. The extraterrestrial visitors befriend a young boy and his pet goose. The boy shows them his hometown - and exposes them to the human condition during the holiday season. After a town bands together to rescue a young bully from drowning, the aliens realize that family and the spirit of forgiveness are the true meaning of Christmas.
A Cosmic Christmas is the first television special produced by Canadian animation company, Nelvana. It premiered on December 6, 1977 in Canada. Nelvana was also responsible for the animation sequence in the infamous Star Wars Christmas Special - featuring the first introduction of Boba Fett.
Hope to see you all sometime this week at the Clinton Street Theater.
Tune in tomorrow with an extra special event happening at Geek in the City!
