WHAT TO DO IN PORTLAND
Bridge City Comics -3- Color Fun in North Portland Aaron Duran
Trendy and Hipster really isn’t something you think about when you think of your friendly neighborhood Geek, course, I’m not sure why you would be thinking of yours truly to begin with. Like the freakishly over-hyped Pearl District, those are the exact words some people use when talking about the “new” North Mississippi. With that in mind, you would think there are few reasons for me to travel to the artsy North Mississippi and for the most part you would be correct. However, there are two excellent exceptions to that rule, one is Video Verite and the other is Portland’s newest comic book shop:
Bridge City Comics – Comics for the People. Bridge City Comics is a, dare I say it, clean and classy comic book shop. Now, I’m not saying any of the shops within the City of Roses is dirty or anything. It’s just that, as a rule, most comic book shops have a certain look and smell to them; in much the same way an old library smells but without the constant “shooshing”. Not so with Bridge City Comics. The store is well lit and is very welcoming to both the shoppers and folks passing by. As their catch-phrase implies, Bridge City Comics really is the comic book shop that is for all, comic fans and non-comic book fans. I’ll be honest, I didn’t think I could get into a shop that didn’t fit my desire to live on the pop culture fringe, but I did. It was quite nice to flip through books without having to squint my eyes only to then shade them as I stepped outside.
Another Dark Horse alumnus on the streets.
What is with all the folks who once worked for Dark Horse Comics then moving on to comic and or toy shop owners? Well, Dark Horse’s loss is the consumers gain. Owner Michael Ring knows his books, as do all the folks who hold down the fort at Bridge City Comics. Moreover, unlike a certain unnamed shop, they don’t judge folks who read both artsy and superhero books. They also know what is going on in the world of pop culture, both nationally and locally. And, unlike your friendly neighborhood Geek, they share their knowledge without the sneer of snobbery. Bridge City Comics really is the shop where your mom can buy books on your list without getting looks for not knowing what she buying. With holiday shopping in full force, Bridge City Comics is a fine place to start for the comic book and graphic novel lover in your life. Check them out at 3725 N. Mississippi Ave. or give them a call at 503-282-5484. Tell them Geek in the City sent you, (no, that still won’t get you anything special, but still)…
