Bruce Campbell Goes Hollywood - In Portland

Aaron Duran

While wandering lovely downtown Portland a few days ago I found myself entering Powell’s (as I often do). There, sitting on the shelf was a copy of
Bruce Campbell's newest book, Make Love - The Bruce Campbell Way, well hot damn, I’ve been waiting a good long while for this one. I dug deep into my pockets for some coin only to remember that I sadly had none on me... That’s okay, I would be back later to pick up a copy. As I left the bookstore I found myself smiling as my memories took me back to a cool evening a few years past when I last saw The Man in Portland. He was conducting a reading / signing of his first opus, If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor.

Unlike a vast majority of the people who came to see Bruce I fully expected the crowd to be massive; although there were still a good three hundred people ahead of me. I am certain however that the Powell’s employees were the most shocked out of all of us. This was just some B movie actor after all, how big could the line get? (FYI, at its peak...Through the store, out the front door, onto the sidewalk, and around the block...twice... Never doubt the power of Bruce). I remember having to stand on a box, Gimlee style, to see him read a few choice chapters from his book.

Setting the book down, Bruce placed himself behind the cheesy folding card table and declared that the Campbell worshiping would commence. (Okay, not really, but that’s how it happened in my mind). As the clocked struck 10:45 pm I had finally made it to the front of the line, with Powell’s a mere 15 minutes from closing. As I was about to hand Bruce my copy for signing the Powell's manager approached the Great Chinned One and told him to stop talking to the fans because they were going to close soon. Ash Bruce looked him in the eye and stated quite matter of factly:

“These people have stood in line for hours, in the rain no less, no way am I not going to stop saying ‘hi’ to each and everyone of them. So, you find some folks who would be willing to put in some OT.”

The wormy manager didn’t know what to say. He wasn’t rude, but Bruce’s desire to give the fans what they wanted was great see... To say nothing of what happened next. He took my book, looked straight at me and said:

“Right?”

To which I responded, “Fuck’n A right”. He smiled back and commented:

“God damn right. Now...who the hell do I make this out to?”

I guess all of this rambling is to say that there are few celebrities in this world who appreciate their fans more then Bruce. While I wouldn’t recommend bugging the guy while he’s ordering a Filet ‘O Fish from McDonalds, I can’t recommend enough for any fan to do all that they can to see him at a sanctioned event.

Which brings me to the point of this installment of “Get Out of the Basement”.

On June 29th starting at 6 pm at the grand Hollywood Theatre in Portland, Oregon Bruce “don’t call me Ash” Campbell will be gracing us with his groovy presence!

The evening will begin with a book signing and reading by Bruce of his new book Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way at 6 pm. Then at 10 pm there will be special screening of his new film Man With the Screaming Brain which he wrote, directed and stars in. Tickets for the film are $10.

While there is no charge for the book signing, preferred seating will be given to film ticket holders. Signing rules will be posted on the Hollywood's website in the next few days. You can get your tickets now by visiting Ticket Web, calling our office at 503/493-1128, or stopping by the Theatre box-office. Advance tickets are recommended, as we expect to sell out!

I truly wish for everyone to try their best to be there. Bruce is always a blast at live events and he gives 110% to his fans. To say nothing of the fact that you will be supporting one of the last and greatest theaters in the country... The gorgeous Hollywood Theatre.

Remember...June 29th...6 pm...Hollywood Theatre.

Be there! I know I will be!
