GET OUT OF THE BASEMENT
Geek Week May 30th – June 5th Aaron Duran
Check back every Monday to learn what is great and Geeky in the City of Roses…and beyond! I know I missed yesterday, but…um…uh… It was a holiday, yea, that’s the ticket. Flicks:
“The Man” Theaters (Regal / Century) – On Friday June 3rd Russell Crowe gets punched in the face a whole bunch of times in the period boxing film, Cinderella Man. While I am not a great fan of Russell Crowe, I do have a soft spot for boxing films, so you’ll likely see me at your local multiplex. Two days earlier, for you Oprah book of the month club fans whom still secretly read Sweet Valley High books we have the flick Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Um, all I really know about this movie is that I will not, nor will I ever be seeing it. Feel free to call me close-minded, that is fine… However, it should be noted, I am chair dancing to Copacabana as I type this…so there!
DVDs:
Boogeyman – Not a bad horror flick as such, but like so many coming out of Hollywood these days, it borders on bland and predictable. Take a look at Film Fever for a complete review of its theatrical release. Please George, bring horror back to America with Land of the Dead…please.
World Poker Tour: Bad Boys of Poker – Man, I never thought the day would come that I would find myself compelled by poker on television. That being said, I love watching this stuff. I used to think the clichéd image of the cigar chewing poker players was just that, until I caught these boys on TV… It’s going to be great to watch it now sans commercials.
Events:
Ground Zero Lounge with Clyde Lewis and Dr. Lawrence Johns – Each and every Tuesday night starting at 7:30pm at Dante’s on SW 3rd and Burnside. No cover. Cheap drinks. Great people. Phat knowledge. Check it out, always a great time!
Portland Rose Festival – Like you didn’t see this one coming. Officially starting Friday, June 2nd, the Rose Festival is usually good for a few hours of fun and as a place to take relatives that come to visit.
Barfly Magazine - Thursday, June 1st from 7-9 at Kelly's Olympian there is a rumor that the guest DJ will be none other then Portland's greatest girl and traffic reporter extrodinare... Sarah Dylan! Be there for good music, good food, and damn good drinks!
Speaking of Jen Lane and all things Barfly...
Barfly Magazine's 6th Anniversary Bash - BarFly's Sixth Anniversary Barbeque Bash. Sunday, June 5th, 2005. Doors open to the public at 6pm; music @ 7pm
at Sabala's Mount Tabor - 4811 SE Hawthorne - Free BBQ! No cover! 21+ w/Id only. Be sure to check Barfly Magazine for full details!
Goonies 20th Anniversary – It’s been mentioned a few times now on this site, but I thought I would remind folks of the event taking place in Astoria from June 3rd to 5th. Sure, it was just a movie, but a movie that still reminds me what it was like to be wee Geek fighting monsters’ and searching for treasure in my backyard, and not caring what others thought of it. For a short 48 hours it will be our time again, with no Troy to ruin the adventure!
