James Doohan Dies at 85 Aaron Duran
James Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. at his Redmond, Wash., home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. Stevens stated that James' cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease.
A gifted linguist, James Doohan was the man responsible for the original dialect of both the bumpy headed Klingons and logical Vulcans heard in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Like so many people, Doohan's portrayal of Scotty inspired this young Star Trek fan to turn towards the sciences. While my path veered from science and engineering toward writing and general Geekiness it was Doohan's performance of Scotty that first made me look at the stars and wonder.
Thankfully, James Doohan earned his well-deserved star in 2004 on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.
Of all the conventions I have attended in my many Geek years, James Doohan was always one of the greatest guest speakers. He was one of the few actors that took his time to speak to each and every fan as they passed him.
Rest in Peace Jimmy.
