Part 1 of 2 - A New Game in Town

Aaron Duran

Way back in Geek in the City’s dark blogger days I posted some bitterness infused rambling about the dreaded combo stores. You know the businesses I speak of... The guy who really only cares about baseball cards but figures he could "make a buck or two" by selling them funny books; or, the hobby shop that has a small RPG section stuffed between some Testors Rockets and electronic model trains. Rare can a Geek find a shop that is completely and 100% dedicated to the world comics...or, in this case... Games!

The soon to be open Guardian Games is such a place!

Actually... This will be Guardian Games grand re-opening. Once calling SE Foster their home, Guardian Games was a haven for those who loved nothing more then the sound of rolling polyhedrons, the scent of new cards, or the glow of a freshly fragged digital kill. Guardian Games was a stronghold where gamers could enjoy their hobby of choice among other like-minded gamers. Alas, like so many cracked walls of Helms Deep, Guardian Games had but one weakness... The raging weather and a less than sturdy neighbor. In a turn of fate that would convince my well-meaning if misguided family members that all things RPG need be removed from the world, a Portland wind storm toppled her taller neighbor upon the Green Monster that was Guardian Games...

However, you can't keep good gamers down.

With their old home no longer usable, Guardian Games gathered the product that was not destroyed by the fickle finger of fate and began to immediately search for a new home. During their search for a new home, Guardian Games continued to bring gaming joy to their fellow RPG fans as they hosted gaming events and card tournaments at local pizza establishments. Thankfully, the search did not take long and Guardian Games quickly made steps toward moving into their new and wholly fantastic new location on 315 SE 3rd Avenue.

And what a place it is!

Guardian Games new location is truly a site to behold. Housed within an older brick Portland building, the new Guardian Games is shaping up to be all that a gamer could want. With a front akin to a medieval castle, gamers and Geeks know they are in for a fantastic shopping and gaming experience when they step into Guardian Games. One part game store, one part arcade, and one part table gaming stations. Guardian Games is all parts Gamer Geek heaven! I can only image the time a gamer (myself included) can and will spend within the stone walls of Guardian Games. With vintage arcade machines in one corner, a projection screen for console games, and a raised stage for all manner of table-top games... Guardian Games is gorgeous in ways that only a game store can.

Guardian Games official re-opening takes place on Friday, February 2, 2007 at 3:00pm! Make sure you mark your calendars now!!! It is going to a raging gamer party!

Be sure to check in with Geek in the City Friday evening for Part 2 of the Guardian Games grand opening by everyone’s favorite barbarian... Diana from DT! Read about all the excitement that comes with a triumphant return and what fantastic music memories haunt the halls of the all new Guardian Games...

Also, Geek in the City wants to extend a huge thanks to Angel, co-owner of Guardian Games for graciously allowing me to explore her store and answer all my fanboy questions as she worked feverishly to prepare the store for customers.

Remember, Guardian Games is located on 315 SE 3rd Avenue just 3 blocks south of East Burnside.

Be there!
