WHAT TO DO IN PORTLAND
Return of a Grand Old Lady Aaron Duran
Months ago, I remember driving down NE Sandy Boulevard and seeing the Roseway Theater was closed. Not just closed for the day, but flat out closed. Shut down. My heart sank as I thought that yet another wonderful old theater was going the way of the J'onn J'onzz. Without a moment of hesitation, I looked into what it would take to convince a bank I was a respectable businessman and go into the movie house business. Thankfully, I wasn't just overacting, I was also completely wrong. Sure, the Roseway Theater was closed, but that was just to give time for a new Roseway Theater to rise up. Just as grand as when she first entertained Portlanders decades past!
The Roseway Theater opened its doors last Friday and premiered in glorious digital projection, The Dark Knight. The Roseway Theater once again stands proud and glorious with her independent peers! While there was a certain charm to the ticket booth employee taking my money, running to the concession stand, and then rushing to the projectors booth; it is great to have a single person for each job. The new seats are plush and comfortable. The lobby is a glorious reminder of ages past. And, the theater proper is the perfect mix of modern technology and 1940s grandeur. Tickets are still a wallet-pinching 6 bucks and they now take plastic! Support your local theater and rediscover the joy of the movie theater experience!
