Sanctuary and Internet Programming Aaron Duran
I've mentioned on more than one occasion that the future of television and film would likely lie in the small production companies; these companies that feed their programming or movies directly to the consumer. These smaller production companies, while no longer making the millions upon millions of dollars like their big studio counterparts, will earn enough to pay their bills and film another show. It often starts with the often-mocked fan film… However, the lessons learned while playing in someone else’s backyard helps the creators move onto original products... This was the case with Kevin Rubio and his now classic fan film, Troops and with Eric and his crew at Darker Projects...However, can a full television season survive as an online program alone?
Stage 3 Media thinks so!
Today, Stage 3 Media announced the debut of their highly anticipated teaser for Sanctuary, a compelling new science fiction series. Sanctuary’s cast is led by Amanda Tapping from Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis. Created by veteran science fiction writer/producer Damian Kindler, Sanctuary also stars Robin Dunne of Dawson’s Creek, The Big Hit and Species as well as Emilie Ullerup from Battlestar Galactica. Kindler and Tapping serve as executive producers along with N. John Smith and director Martin Wood who worked on Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis.
The trailer for Sanctuary, which can be found at www.sanctuaryforall.com, definitely displays some high-end production values… Which is something lacking in many internet based programs. Being a huge fan of horror and Sci-Fi (which really shouldn’t need mentioning anymore), the concept behind Sanctuary has piqued my interest. I know this reads like some blatant PR and you are probably correct. However, I still believe that the internet represents the best opportunity for highly creative people to work outside the studio system and tell their stories without needing to appease suits and advertisers… It looks as if Stage 3 Media does as well and I want to see what they do with it…
Tune in next time when I will talk to The Captain and discuss the poorly reviewed (and even poorer mailed) William Shatner DVD of the Month Club…
