The Horror Holiday Starts Now!

Aaron Duran

This weekend in Portland F’ing Oregon might be the busiest of all time. More so if you’re a horror movie / pop culture junky. It all starts this Friday night, sadly, like poor Sophie you must choose between two fantastic events.

First, at 11pm at the glorious Bagdad Theater, The Cort and Fatboy Show are showing the greatest film to come out of the 80s…ever. The instant classic Ghostbusters! Not only will you experience the full glory of a class-5 free roaming vapor (and a real nasty one too), but you get to experience said awesomeness with beer and tots! (Here’s hoping McMenamins has their seasonal beer on tap). While the movie starts at 11pm, you better get your ass in line by 9pm. This will sell-out! Tickets are only $3.00 and you gotta’ be 21 or older. However, if Paranormal Investigations and Eliminations aren’t your thing, you can get your Ancient Horror on at the...

2008 HP Lovecraft Film Festival and Cthulhu Con!

HPLDual_Poster.jpg

In its 13th year, the HP Lovecraft Film Festival and Cthulhu Con come crashing into the stunning The Hollywood Theatre in NE Portland this Friday through Sunday. This year promises to be the biggest and best Lovecraft Film Festival yet. With fantastic features films like the Cthulhu, dozens of stunningly horrific shorts, a unique dealer room, live concerts with Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, and daily after-hours parties at Tony Starlight’s Supper Club and Lounge… You can also meet the man that created Hellboy, Mike Mignolia! (To say nothing of the king of Necropolis, Mr. Brian Lumley). How can you go wrong?

Check out www.hplfilmfestival.com for more details and ticket information. Little hint, do not wait to buy your tickets at the door. They can and will sell out. (Trust me, ain’t nothing sadder than a Cthulhu Fan getting turned away…all that nihilism generated for nothing…NOTHING).

Finally, if horror just isn’t your thing but you still want to support the local arts, your friendly neighborhood Geek understands and is here for you. Check out the first ever Blue Carpet Film Fest at the 5 Star Theatre (13 NW 6th – across from the Roseland) on October 4.

The fest starts at 8pm with four great bands: the stunning Sarah Moon (as heard on Film Fever Radio, episode 118), the funky Erotic City with their Prince tribute, the smooth Tripple Grip, and the awesome Julians Ride. Then, at 10pm, the films start from local filmmakers Rain Country Creative and Makeshift Contraction.

Tickets are only 5 bucks if you arrive at 8pm, but it jumps to $10 if you just hit the movies. Come on? $5 for music and movies. Be there and tell them Geek in the City sent you! (Seriously, Jarius and the boys in Rain Country Creative are friends, tell them).

Whew. I’m tired just writing about this weekend.
