Updated Geek Week May 23rd - 29th

Aaron Duran

Welcome to the first installment of Geek Week, a new and…well, um…Weekly entry to Geek in the City. Check back every Monday to learn what is great and Geeky in the City of Roses…and beyond!

Flicks:

The Clinton Street Theater – May 26th, check out the Pacific University Student Film Screening. Take a look and see what tomorrows filmmakers are making today, from digital video to 16mm, these students pour their love into their stories. Check it out, tickets are $6 and the show starts at 9pm. don’t forget that every Saturday night at midnight is the countries longest running showing of The Rocky Picture Show. Fan or not, you owe it to yourself to see this cultural event at least once in your life.

The Laurelhurst Theater – Nothing too special this week (or month); but, have no fear, the theater will be back in full force come June as they reveal their brand new and uber comfy theater chairs… Just in time for the Wild Bunch, showing on June 10th!

“The Man” Theaters (Regal / Century) – Some Adam Sandler remake and other Hollywood crap… Does it matter? Your geeky ass (and mine) will be watching Star Wars again, and again, and again, and one more time still.

DVDs:

Airwolf: Season One - Okay, that was technically last week, but I simply couldn’t let that bit of information slip past my fellow Geeks. It would be wrong.

Garden State – In all honesty, a film I did not expect to like, yet I found myself smiling through most of the time. Cliché it may sound, but this movie will make anyone who dreads going home grin from ear to ear.

Batman – The Animated Series Volume 3 – Unless the newest flick blows me away (which I truly hope it does) the Batman Animated Series will still be the greatest attempt to bring the Dark Knight to full motion life. Less a dig on the previous films and more a praise to the skill and talent that went into making this Emmy award winning series.

Law and Order – The Third Season – You know, just in case the never ending broadcasting on A&E just isn’t enough for you.

Games:

Heroes of Battle – From the Wizards site: This supplement for the D&D game reveals the pivotal roles characters can play in the midst of great battles. With rules and options for creating or playing adventures on and around battlefields, Heroes of Battle plunges characters into wartime situations and challenges them with climactic battles of epic proportions. In other words… All your bases WILL belong to you!

Comics:

Green Lantern #1 – After the ass kicking fun of Green Lantern: Rebirth, Geoff Johns starts the regular ongoing series. If he can maintain half of the fun and excitement of the Rebirth series, this will sure to be a great book!

Project OMAC #2 – The march continues towards DC’s Infinite Crisis book. While most summer crossover events are tiresome at the most, this one is turning out to be truly entertaining; with Project OMAC being the best of them all!

New Avengers #6 - The promo promises wall to wall New Avengers action… This sadly means the team will sit around a table and talk for about 6 pages… Then maybe, just maybe something will happen that no one gives two craps for. Damn it Bendis, you are living the Geek dream here…try doing something interesting with it!

Mr. T #1 – What do you need to know fools?! This is Mr. T dammit! Get, go get it now…Foo!

Red Sonja #1 – Comic, check. Death by sword, check. Hot red-head, check. Hot red-head in chainmail bikini, big check on that baby.

Events:

Barfly Magazine Updated - Don't forget May 26th, at 7pm at Kelly's Olympian, everyone's favorite Hairy Scary Guy will be spinning the spooky beats with yours truly. A huge shout out to the lovely and talented Jen Lane for throwing the best damn weekly party in the city! Remember - Tonight - Kelly's Olympian - 7pm - Be there!

Weekend at Riley’s Updated – Not only is Tim Riley’s weekend broadcast the best dang 30 minutes of your life. But, this week will star your friendly neighborhood Geek along with film legend Scott Dally . If you want to know all that is going on in the world of Geekdom...weekend at Riley's is where it is at!

Ground Zero Lounge with Clyde Lewis and Dr. Lawrence Johns – Each and every Tuesday night starting at 7:30pm at Dante’s on SW 3rd and Burnside. No cover. Cheap drinks. Great people. Phat knowledge. Check it out, always a great time!

Dry County Crooks – It’s official! The outstanding and local group, the Dry County Crooks will be having their CD release party for their newest album, The Wrong Side of the Tracks. The show will be held at the above mentioned Dante’s on Friday May 27th. Cover is $6 at the door. Having seen these boys in action before, this is a show you will NOT want to miss!

Sabalas Mount Tabor Update on Friday May 27th at 8pm; Tri-Polar is releasing their new CD at a benefit concert! And ... topping off the night ... a HEAVY METAL KARAOKE CONTEST with Rick Emerson and director per excellance Joni DeRouchie as your special guest judges! In the words of one BtJ director: We'll be shmoozing and selling BTJ t-shirts all night long, so be there or be a big, fat loser! And it's for charity and stuff, so you're a dick if you don't come. Think of the children!

If you have a new release or event you’d like to pimp to your fellow Geeks, feel free to drop me a line here… I’ll be sure to get the word out!
