Batman Begins - The Spoilerific Fanboy Comments Aaron Duran
This is the gratuitous fanboy review and observations. If you want a legitimate and spoiler free review, read the one above…
If not… Here we go!
Sure, the movie is not 100% in line with the accepted Batman chronology, but it is obvious the people are making their own film continuity and as long as they stay with the core theme of all the characters involved, then great! Have at it! (Hell, this movie had Joe Chill for heavens sake).
I’m okay with the “bat-suit". Sure, it’s still an armored rubber suit, but it moves so much better than any other Bat film… Moreover, it’s believable to boot. In fact, for being a book comic movie most of the gadgets in the film are pretty dang believable. Just as it should be.
The Batmobile. Okay look, I know there has been a ton of people claiming that it doesn’t look right. Let me go on record as to say that I never felt that way. To me, the Batmobile is just another tool in Batman’s arsenal against crime. As such, it need only be functional with a helpful sampling primal rage. Many people didn’t like the non-streamlined look of this car. Well, I flat out loved it. This Batmobile is angry. This Batmobile punishes the streets (and rooftops) of Gotham. This is the Batmobile that most hardcore Batman fans wanted to see.
When Batman is speaking to Gordon and Gordon's reply is, “I think you want to help", I almost cheered. With that one line the friendship between these two idealists was formed, even if they don’t know it yet.
Watching Batman take out thugs without ever seeing him had to be the flat-out greatest thing I’ve ever seen on film…
No wait, watching Batman hang Flass over a building screaming “Do I look like the police?!" was the greatest thing I’ve ever seen on film.
Actually... The GREATEST moment I've ever see also included that poor dirty cop Flass...
Flass: "I don't know, swear to God!"
Batman: "Swear to me!"
I think I like Scarecrow as a doctor at Arkham Asylum more then I do as an insane professor. Score one for the moviemakers!
The Ducard / Ghul twist was pretty dang impressive. I am certain we have NOT seen the end of Liam Neeson… No one looks that peaceful at their “death" unless they have a back-up plan. (See Obi-Wan in Episode IV).
Unlike the previous films… This Batman DID NOT KILL… Thank you, thank you, thank you! (And no, letting Ghul die is NOT the same). Batman has never had issues with criminals greeting a fate that they themselves caused.
I never would have thought so many villains in one movie would work so well, but damn did it work.
Katie Holmes… Okay, she did a good job in her role as Rachael Dawson. It’s not her that I had a problem with; it was the character of Rachael Dawson. If you remove the love angle, it is painfully clear that the character is MEANT to be Harvey Dent, period.
Thank you for not offing all the villains. Nice to know we can actually have (gasp) reoccurring and continuing story lines.
Finally… The end speech between Gordon and Batman is perfect and does a better job of explaining the “rise of the freaks" in Gotham better then the comics EVER did. Kudos to Goyer… Dude can’t direct for crap, but he sure knows his writing. Keep it up my man… Maybe I DO want to see what you can do with The Flash!
Speaking of The Flash… I like the new DC logo. Sure, some people will complain that DC is simply trying to copy Marvel. I don’t see it that way. DC is simply trying to put their imprint on their films…Something that Warner Brothers sadly prevented for so many years.
Attention David Goyer: I want to see the Joker as much as the next person… But please Goyer, handle him correctly. The Joker is just as iconic as Batman and can be one of the most difficult villains to write. It is obvious you studied Batman comics… The influences of Year One, The Long Halloween, and the O’Neil/Adams era of Batman are apparent. When it comes time to writing the Joker, take a gander at The Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum, No Man’s Land…Please…
