The Little Geek Inside.

Aaron Duran

This would normally be the moment where I make an "O face" joke... However, that is beneath me...Heh, beneath... Ahem, sorry, thought I was stronger. I thought wrong. Anyway, there are moments in time where I step back and observe just how Geeky I truly am. Slight pangs of shame wash over me as my utter Geekiness bursts out like so many Class Five Free Roaming Vapors from a blown protection grid. (With that last sentence now joining the list). When I do observe said events, I have what I can only call, moments of clarity. Take for instance a simple game of "Name That Tune". Who’s Johnny begins playing. Now, for the life of me I cannot remember the title or the artist. Sadly, I can and do completely see Number 5 dancing with Ally Sheedy. Even worse, I dive into a robotic toned monologue recreating the classic tomato soup scene at the end of the flick. Upon finishing, I looked up to a room of shocked faces and stunned half-grins. (Officially becoming the most embarrassing moment since I did a Tauntaun impression at Episode III). Although all laughed at the moment, I still found myself ever-so-slightly slinking back to my high school Geekdom and wishing for nothing less then a locker to crawl back within.

Until I am reminded that I am not alone...

Your friendly neighborhood Geek has a weakness for well-made sandwiches. No processed Subway crap either. No, I like them thick. Dislocate your jaw as you take a bite type thick. Thankfully, my neighborhood has just such a place. The location is a tad quirky and the owner still insists on calling me "Eric", but I love it just the same. They also enjoy playing classical music all day. Well, playing is not the correct term. These people turn their Mozart to 11 on a constant basis. (This may explain the "Eric" thing). On this particular day, OPB was doing a special Music of the Stars version of their afternoon program. Now, knowing what you know about this site. Knowing what you know about me. What could they possibly have played that would compel me to put fingers to keyboard?

Star Wars theme baby!

This wasn't just any ‘ol version of the Star Wars theme either. No way. This was old school Episode IV - A New Hope theme. Not only that, but I am fairly certain this was a broadcast of the excellent digital re-masters of the 1993 trilogy box set. don't ask how I know such things. My people simply do. As my mind created the scene of an Imperial Star Destroyer overwhelming the poor Tantive IV, a strange event began. An event that allowed me to forever bury my remaining Geek shame. All around me, people from all walks of life were humming. Each and everyone of them, oblivious to the world around, they were humming right along with the iconic Williams piece blaring from the speakers. What choice did I have but to quietly join them?

Absolutely none, so joined them I did.

This wasn't a grand galactic choir by any stretch. It was likely that most of them didn't even notice the other. This was just folks on their lunch breaks. Folks whose day was made a little better by that galaxy far, far way. And, by the little Geek that resides in us all...
